1 Moun Filisti yo sanble tout sòlda yo lavil Soko nan peyi moun Jida yo, pou y' al goumen. Yo pran pozisyon yon kote yo rele Fwontyè San, ant lavil Soko ak lavil Azeka. 2 Sayil vini ansanm ak moun Izrayèl yo, yo pran pozisyon nan fon Bwadchenn lan, epi yo ranje kò yo anfas moun Filisti yo pou y' al goumen ak yo. 3 Moun Filisti yo te sou yon ti mòn yon bò, moun pèp Izrayèl yo te sou yon lòt ti mòn anfas. Fon an te nan mitan de lame yo. 4 Yon bowòm yo rele Golyat, moun lavil Gat, soti nan kan moun Filisti yo, li parèt devan sòlda pèp Izrayèl yo, li mande pou yonn ladan yo vin fè fas kare ak li. Li te gen nèf pye wotè. 5 Li te gen yon kas fè nan tèt li ak yon rad fèt an plak fè sou li. Rad la te peze sansenkant (0150) liv pou pi piti. 6 Li te gen janbyè fèt an fè nan janm li, ak yon ti frenn fèt an asye pandye sou zepòl li. 7 Bwa gwo frenn ki te nan men l' lan te menm gwosè ak yon gwo manch pilon. Pwent frenn lan te fèt an fè. Li te peze vin liv konsa. Te gen yon sòlda ki t'ap mache devan l' avèk plak pwotèj li a. 8 Golyat kanpe, epi li rele moun pèp Izrayèl yo, li di yo konsa: -Se goumen nou vin goumen? Poukisa atò? Mwen menm, se moun Filisti mwen ye. Nou menm, se esklav Sayil nou ye. Chwazi yon nonm nan mitan nou pou l' vin kare avè m'. 9 Si l' rive bat mwen pou l' touye m', moun Filisti yo va vin esklav moun Izrayèl yo. Men, si se mwen ki bat li, si m' touye l', se nou menm moun Izrayèl yo k'ap vin esklav moun Filisti yo pou sèvi yo. 10 Li di yo ankò: -Jòdi a mwen mete tout moun Izrayèl yo an defi. M' pini nou jwenn yon nonm ki pou vin kare avè m'. 11 Lè Sayil ak tout sòlda moun Izrayèl yo tande sa sòlda Filisti a te di yo, yo vin pè anpil. Yo pran tranble. 17 Yon jou, Izayi di David konsa: -Pran yon mamit grenn griye ak dis pen sa yo, kouri pote yo bay frè ou yo nan kan an. 18 Pran dis fwomaj sa yo, pote yo bay kòmandan an. W'a pran nouvèl frè ou yo, ki jan yo ye. Epi w'a fè yo ba ou yon bagay pou m' sèten ou wè yo an sante. 19 Wa Sayil, frè ou yo ansanm ak tout lòt mesye Izrayèl yo nan Fon Bwadchenn lan ap goumen ak moun Filisti yo. 20 Nan denmen maten, David leve byen bonè, li kite yon gadò pou veye mouton yo pou li, li pran manje a, epi li pati jan Izayi te di l' la. Yo t'ap rele pou chofe sòlda yo. 21 Lame moun Filisti yo ak lame moun Izrayèl yo vin kanpe yonn anfas lòt pou batay la. 22 David kite manje li te pote a nan men nonm ki te reskonsab pwovizyon yo, li kouri kote batay la tapral mare a, l' al jwenn frè li yo. Li mande yo nouvèl yo. 23 Li t'ap pale ak yo konsa, lè Golyat, gwo sòlda Filisti a, moun lavil Gat la, soti nan kan moun Filisti yo, li vin kanpe devan sòlda pèp Izrayèl yo pou mande yo batay jan l' te konn fè l' anvan an. David tande sa Golyat t'ap di. 24 Lè moun pèp Izrayèl yo wè Golyat parèt yo pran kouri tèlman yo te pè. 25 Yonn t'ap di lòt: -Gade nonm lan non! Tande jan l'ap mete nou an defi! 29 David reponn li: -Kisa m' fè, mezanmi! Yon senp ti keksyon m'ap mande moun yo la a wi! 30 Li vire bò yon lòt moun, li mande l' menm keksyon an. Nenpòt lè yon lyon osinon yon lous vin pran yonn nan mouton yo, 35 mwen kouri dèyè l', m' atake l', mwen wete mouton an anba grif li. Si lè sa a, lyon an osinon lous la konprann pou l' vire sou mwen, mwen pran l' nan gagann, mwen bat li jouk mwen touye l'. 36 Menm jan mwen touye lyon ak lous, se konsa m'a touye sòlda Filisti sa a ki pa moun k'ap sèvi Seyè a. M'ap touye l' paske li mete lame Bondye vivan an an defi vin goumen avè l'. 37 David di ankò: -Seyè a te delivre m' anba pat lyon yo ak pat lous yo, l'a delivre m' tou anba men sòlda Filisti sa a. Sayil di David: -Bon, ale non! Mwen mande Seyè a pou l' avèk ou! 38 Sayil pran pwòp rad lagè pa l' yo, li mete sou David. Li mete yon kas fè nan tèt David ak yon rad fèt an plak fè pou pwoteje kò li. 39 David pase nepe Sayil la nan ren l', anwo rad lagè a. Men, li fè sa pou l' mache, li pa t' kapab, paske li pa t' konn sèvi ak tout bagay sa yo. Li di Sayil konsa: -Mwen pa ka mache ak tout bagay sa yo sou mwen, mwen pa konn sèvi ak yo. Epi David wete tout bagay yo sou li. 40 Lèfini, li pran baton l' nan men l', li ranmase senk ti wòch won nan ravin lan, li mete yo nan ralfò li sèvi lè l'ap okipe mouton yo. Apre sa, fistibal li nan men l', li mache sou Golyat. 41 Sòlda Filisti a pran mache sou David tou. Nonm ki t'ap pote plak pwotèj li a t'ap mache devan li. Li t'ap pwoche pi pre David. 42 Lè sòlda Filisti a gade, li wè David pi pre, li tchwipe, epi li vire tèt li sou kote, paske li te wè se yon timoun ak cheve koulè kannèl, ak yon bèl ti figi ki te devan l'. 43 Sòlda Filisti a di David konsa: -Gen lè se yon chen mwen ye pou se avèk yon baton w'ap mache sou mwen? Epi li pran non bondye l' yo pou madichonnen David. 44 Apre sa, li di ankò: -Mwen pini ou vanse sou mwen pou ou wè si mwen p'ap pran kò ou pou m' bay zwazo nan syèl ak bèt nan bwa manje. 45 David di sòlda Filisti a konsa: -W'ap mache sou mwen avèk nepe, gwo frenn ak ti frenn. Men mwen menm, m'ap mache sou ou nan non Seyè ki gen tout pouvwa a, Bondye lame pèp Izrayèl la. Se li menm ou te mete an defi vin goumen avè ou. 46 Jòdi a menm, Seyè a pral lage ou nan men m'. M'ap vide ou atè, m'ap koupe tèt ou. Lèfini, m'ap kite kadav ou ansanm ak kadav sòlda Filisti yo pou zwazo nan syèl ak bèt nan bwa manje. Konsa, tout moun nan peyi a va konnen pèp Izrayèl la gen yon Bondye. 47 Wi, tout moun ki sanble isit la a va wè Bondye pa bezwen ni nepe ni frenn pou delivre pèp li a. Batay la rele l' pa l'. Se li menm ki pral lage tout moun Filisti yo nan men pèp Izrayèl la. 48 Golyat pran mache ankò sou David. David menm t'ap kouri al kontre ak li devan lame yo. 49 Li foure men l' nan ti ralfò li a, li pran yon wòch ladan l', li mete l' nan fistibal la, li vize Golyat. Li frape sòlda Filisti a nan mitan fwon. Wòch la antre nan kalbas tèt sòlda Filisti a. Sòlda Filisti a tonbe fas atè. 50 Se konsa David te bat sòlda Filisti a avèk yon fistibal ak yon wòch. Li vide sòlda Filisti a atè, li touye l'. Li pa t' gen yon bout nepe menm nan men l'. 51 David kouri al bò kote sòlda Filisti a, li moute sou li, li rale nepe sòlda Filisti a soti nan djenn li, li touye l', lèfini li koupe tèt li. Lè moun Filisti yo wè bowòm yo a te mouri, yo kouri met deyò. 52 Sòlda pèp Izrayèl yo ak mesye peyi Jida yo leve, yo pouse gwo rèl lagè yo a, yo pran kouri dèyè moun Filisti yo jouk devan lavil Gat, jouk devan pòtay Ekwon. Te gen kadav moun Filisti sou tout wout ki mennen lavil Charayim lan jouk lavil Gat ak Ekwon. 53 Se lè sa a moun pèp Izrayèl yo sispann kouri dèyè moun Filisti yo, yo kase tèt tounen. Yo fè yon gwo piyay nan kan moun Filisti yo. 54 David pran tèt Golyat, li pote l' lavil Jerizalèm, men li kenbe zam sòlda Filisti a lakay li. 55 Lè Sayil wè David t'ap mache al kontre ak sòlda Filisti a, li mande Abnè, kòmandan lame li a: -Abnè, pitit ki moun jenn gason sa a ye? Abnè reponn li: -Monwa, mwen fè sèman, menm jan ou vivan an, mwen pa konnen l'. 56 Wa a di li: -Al chache konnen pitit ki moun li ye. 57 Apre David fin touye sòlda Filisti a, li tounen nan kan moun pèp Izrayèl yo. Abnè pran l', li mennen l' devan Sayil. David te kenbe tèt sòlda Filisti a nan men l' toujou.

1Sa 17:1-3. The Israelites and Philistines Being Ready to Battle.
1. the Philistines gathered together their armies--twenty-seven years after their overthrow at Michmash. Having now recovered their spirits and strength, they sought an opportunity of wiping out the infamy of that national disaster, as well as to regain their lost ascendency over Israel.
Shocoh--now Shuweikeh, a town in the western plains of Judah (Jos 15:35), nine Roman miles from Eleutheropolis, toward Jerusalem [Robinson].
Azekah--a small place in the neighborhood.
Ephes-dammim--or, "Pas-dammim" (1Ch 11:13), "the portion" or "effusion of blood," situated between the other two.
1 Samyèl 17:2
2. valley of Elah--that is, "the Terebinth," now Wady Er-Sumt [Robinson]. Another valley somewhat to the north, now called Wady Beit Hanina, has been fixed on by the tradition of ages.
1Sa 17:4-11. Goliath Challenges a Combat.
1 Samyèl 17:4-11
4-11. a champion--Hebrew, a "man between two"; that is, a person who, on the part of his own people, undertook to determine the national quarrel by engaging in single combat with a chosen warrior in the hostile army.
1 Samyèl 17:17
17. Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves--In those times campaigns seldom lasted above a few days at a time. The soldiers were volunteers or militia, who were supplied with provisions from time to time by their friends at home.
1 Samyèl 17:18
18. carry these ten cheeses to the captain--to enlist his kind attention. Oriental cheeses are very small; and although they are frequently made of so soft a consistence as to resemble curds, those which David carried seem to have been fully formed, pressed, and sufficiently dried to admit of their being carried.
take their pledge--Tokens of the soldiers' health and safety were sent home in the convenient form of a lock of their hair, or piece of their nail, or such like.
1 Samyèl 17:20
20. David left the sheep with a keeper--This is the only instance in which the hired shepherd is distinguished from the master or one of his family.
trench--some feeble attempt at a rampart. It appears (see Margin) to have been formed by a line of carts or chariots, which, from the earliest times, was the practice of nomad people.
1 Samyèl 17:22
22. left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage--to make his way to the standard of Judah.
1 Samyèl 17:25
25. make his father's house free in Israel--His family should be exempted from the impositions and services to which the general body of the Israelites were subjected.
1 Samyèl 17:34-36
34-36. a lion, and a bear--There were two different rencontres, for those animals prowl alone. The bear must have been a Syrian bear, which is believed to be a distinct species, or perhaps a variety, of the brown bear. The beard applies to the lion alone. Those feats seem to have been performed with no weapons more effective than the rude staves and stones of the field, or his shepherd's crook.
1 Samyèl 17:37
37. The Lord that delivered me--It would have been natural for a youth, and especially an Oriental youth, to make a parade of his gallantry. But David's piety sank all consideration of his own prowess and ascribed the success of those achievements to the divine aid, which he felt assured would not be withheld from him in a cause which so intimately concerned the safety and honor of His people.
Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee--The pious language of the modest but valiant youth impressed the monarch's heart. He felt that it indicated the true military confidence for Israel, and, therefore, made up his mind, without any demur, to sanction a combat on which the fate of his kingdom depended, and with a champion supporting his interests apparently so unequal to the task.
1 Samyèl 17:38-39
38-39. Saul armed David with his armour--The ancient Hebrews were particularly attentive to the personal safety of their warriors, and hence Saul equipped the youthful champion with his own defensive accoutrements, which would be of the best style. It is probable that Saul's coat of mail, or corslet, was a loose shirt, otherwise it could not have fitted both a stripling and a man of the colossal stature of the king.
1 Samyèl 17:40
40. brook--wady.
bag--or scrip for containing his daily food.
sling--The sling consisted of a double rope with a thong, probably of leather, to receive the stone. The slinger held a second stone in his left hand. David chose five stones, as a reserve, in case the first should fail. Shepherds in the East carry a sling and stones still, for the purpose of driving away, or killing, the enemies that prowl about the flock.
1 Samyèl 17:42-47
42-47. the Philistine said ... said David to the Philistine--When the two champions met, they generally made each of them a speech, and sometimes recited some verses, filled with allusions and epithets of the most opprobrious kind, hurling contempt and defiance at one another. This kind of abusive dialogue is common among the Arab combatants still. David's speech, however, presents a striking contrast to the usual strain of these invectives. It was full of pious trust, and to God he ascribed all the glory of the triumph he anticipated.
1 Samyèl 17:49
49. smote the Philistine in his forehead--At the opening for the eyes--that was the only exposed part of his body.
1 Samyèl 17:51
51. cut off his head--not as an evidence of the giant's death, for his slaughter had been effected in presence of the whole army, but as a trophy to be borne to Saul. The heads of slain enemies are always regarded in the East as the most welcome tokens of victory.
1 Samyèl 17:52
52. Shaaraim--(See Jos 15:36).
1 Samyèl 17:54
54. tent--the sacred tabernacle. David dedicated the sword of Goliath as a votive offering to the Lord.
1 Samyèl 17:55-58
55-58. Saul ... said unto Abner ... whose son is this youth?--A young man is more spoken of in many Eastern countries by his father's name than his own. The growth of the beard, and other changes on a now full-grown youth, prevented the king from recognizing his former favorite minstrel [1Sa 16:23].
