Psalm 91 has comforted believers in war, illness and fear for centuries. It uses strong images: a shelter, a shadow, wings, a shield. Each one says the same thing in a different way: the one who trusts God is not abandoned.

Psalms 91:1-4

1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. 3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. 4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

King James Version

The images of protection

  • Shelter and shadow: a place close to God, like shade in the heat of the desert.
  • Wings: the tender care of a bird covering its young.
  • Shield and buckler: God’s faithfulness defends us like armour.
  • God’s answer (verses 14–16): God himself speaks and promises to answer, to be present in trouble and to deliver.

Reading the promises wisely

When Satan tempted Jesus, he quoted Psalm 91 to push him to jump from the temple (Matthew 4:6). Jesus refused: the psalm is a call to trust God, not a reason to test him. Believers still face trials, but they are never outside God’s care.
