1 Psaume. Cantique pour le jour du sabbat. 2 Il est beau de louer l’Éternel, Et de célébrer ton nom, ô Très-Haut ! 3 D’annoncer le matin ta bonté, Et ta fidélité pendant les nuits, 4 Sur l’instrument à dix cordes et sur le luth, Aux sons de la harpe. 5 Tu me réjouis par tes œuvres, ô Éternel ! Et je chante avec allégresse l’ouvrage de tes mains. 6 Que tes œuvres sont grandes, ô Éternel ! Que tes pensées sont profondes ! 7 L’homme stupide n’y connaît rien, Et l’insensé n’y prend point garde. 8 Si les méchants croissent comme l’herbe, Si tous ceux qui font le mal fleurissent, C’est pour être anéantis à jamais. 9 Mais toi, tu es le Très-Haut, À perpétuité, ô Éternel ! 10 Car voici, tes ennemis, ô Éternel ! Car voici, tes ennemis périssent ; Tous ceux qui font le mal sont dispersés. 11 Et tu me donnes la force du buffle ; Je suis arrosé avec une huile fraîche. 12 Mon œil se plaît à contempler mes ennemis, Et mon oreille à entendre mes méchants adversaires. 13 Les justes croissent comme le palmier, Ils s’élèvent comme le cèdre du Liban. 14 Plantés dans la maison de l’Éternel, Ils prospèrent dans les parvis de notre Dieu ; 15 Ils portent encore des fruits dans la vieillesse, Ils sont pleins de sève et verdoyants, 16 Pour faire connaître que l’Éternel est juste. Il est mon rocher, et il n’y a point en lui d’iniquité.

Psaumes 92:1

PSALM 92

Psa 92:1-15. A Psalm-song--(see on Psa 30:1, title). The theme: God should be praised for His righteous judgments on the wicked and His care and defense of His people. Such a topic, at all times proper, is specially so for the reflections of the Sabbath day.

1. sing ... name--celebrate Thy perfections.

Psaumes 92:2

2. in the morning, ... every night--diligently and constantly (Psa 42:8).

loving kindness--literally, "mercy."

faithfulness--in fulfilling promises (Psa 89:14).

Psaumes 92:3

3. In such a work all proper aid must be used.

with a ... sound--or, on Higgaion (see on Psa 9:16), perhaps an instrument of that name, from its sound resembling the muttered sound of meditation, as expressed also by the word. This is joined with the harp.

4. thy work--that is, of providence (Psa 90:16, 17).

Psaumes 92:5

5. great ... works--correspond to deep or vast thoughts (Psa 40:5; Ro 11:23).

Psaumes 92:6

6. A brutish man knoweth not--that is, God's works, so the Psalmist describes himself (Psa 73:22) when amazed by the prosperity of the wicked, now understood and explained.

Psaumes 92:8

8. This he does in part, by contrasting their ruin with God's exaltation and eternity.

most high--as occupying the highest place in heaven (Psa 7:7; 18:16).

Psaumes 92:9-10

9-10. A further contrast with the wicked, in the lot of the righteous, safety and triumph.

Psaumes 92:11

11. see ... [and] ... hear my desire--or, literally, "look on" my enemies and hear of the wicked (compare Psa 27:11; 54:7)--that is, I shall be gratified by their fall.

Psaumes 92:12-14

12-14. The vigorous growth, longevity, utility, fragrance, and beauty of these noble trees, set forth the life, character, and destiny of the pious;

Psaumes 92:15

15. and they thus declare God's glory as their strong and righteous ruler.
