1 MEJOR es el pobre que camina en su sencillez, que el de perversos labios y fatuo. 2 El alma sin ciencia no es buena; y el presuroso de pies peca. 3 La insensatez del hombre tuerce su camino; y contra Jehová se aira su corazón. 4 Las riquezas allegan muchos amigos: mas el pobre, de su amigo es apartado. 5 El testigo falso no quedará sin castigo; y el que habla mentiras no escapará. 6 Muchos rogarán al príncipe: mas cada uno es amigo del hombre que da. 7 Todos los hermanos del pobre le aborrecen: ¡cuánto más sus amigos se alejarán de él! buscará la palabra y no la hallará. 8 El que posee entendimiento, ama su alma: el que guarda la inteligencia, hallará el bien. 9 El testigo falso no quedará sin castigo; y el que habla mentiras, perecerá. 10 No conviene al necio el deleite: ¡cuánto menos al siervo ser señor de los príncipes! 11 La cordura del hombre detiene su furor; y su honra es disimular la ofensa. 12 Como el bramido del cachorro de león es la ira del rey; y su favor como el rocío sobre la hierba. 13 Dolor es para su padre el hijo necio; y gotera continua las contiendas de la mujer. 14 La casa y las riquezas herencia son de los padres: mas de Jehová la mujer prudente. 15 La pereza hace caer en sueño; y el alma negligente hambreará. 16 El que guarda el mandamiento, guarda su alma: mas el que menospreciare sus caminos, morirá. 17 A Jehová empresta el que da al pobre, y él le dará su paga. 18 Castiga á tu hijo en tanto que hay esperanza; mas no se excite tu alma para destruirlo. 19 El de grande ira llevará la pena: y si usa de violencias, añadirá nuevos males. 20 Escucha el consejo, y recibe la corrección, para que seas sabio en tu vejez. 21 Muchos pensamientos hay en el corazón del hombre; mas el consejo de Jehová permanecerá. 22 Contentamiento es á los hombres hacer misericordia: pero mejor es el pobre que el mentiroso. 23 El temor de Jehová es para vida; y con él vivirá el hombre, lleno de reposo; no será visitado de mal. 24 El perezoso esconde su mano en el seno: aun á su boca no la llevará. 25 Hiere al escarnecedor, y el simple se hará avisado; y corrigiendo al entendido, entenderá ciencia. 26 El que roba á su padre y ahuyenta á su madre, hijo es avergonzador y deshonrador. 27 Cesa, hijo mío, de oir la enseñanza que induce á divagar de las razones de sabiduría. 28 El testigo perverso se burlará del juicio; y la boca de los impíos encubrirá la iniquidad. 29 Aparejados están juicios para los escarnecedores, y azotes para los cuerpos de los insensatos.

Proverbios 19:2

2. The last illustrates the first clause. Rashness, the result of ignorance, brings trouble.

Proverbios 19:3

3. perverteth ... way--turns him back from right (Pr 13:6; Jas 1:13); and he blames God for his failures.

Proverbios 19:4

4. (Compare Pr 14:20). Such facts are often adduced with implied disapprobation.

5. Compare Pr 19:9, where perish explains not escape here (compare Psa 88:9, 10).

Proverbios 19:8

8. (Compare Margin; Pr 15:32).

loveth ... soul--or, "himself," which he evinces by regarding his best interests.

keepeth--or, "regards."

Proverbios 19:10

10. (Compare Pr 17:7). The fool is incapable of properly using pleasure as knowledge, yet for him to have it is less incongruous than the undue elevation of servants. Let each abide in his calling (1Co 7:20).

Proverbios 19:11

11. (Compare Pr 14:29; 16:32). This inculcation of a forgiving spirit shows that true religion is always the same (Mt 5:22-24).

Proverbios 19:12

12. (Compare Pr 16:14, 15; 20:2). A motive to submission to lawful authority.

Proverbios 19:13

13. calamity--literally, "calamities," varied and many.

continual dropping--a perpetual annoyance, wearing out patience.

Proverbios 19:14

14. A contrast of men's gifts and God's, who, though author of both blessings, confers the latter by His more special providence.

and--or, "but," implying that the evils of Pr 19:13 are only avoided by His care.

Proverbios 19:15

15. a deep sleep--a state of utter indifference.

idle soul--or, "person" (compare Pr 10:4; 12:24).

Proverbios 19:16

16. (Compare Pr 10:17; 13:13).

despiseth ... ways--opposed to keeping or observing, neglects (Pr 16:17) (as unworthy of regard) his moral conduct.

Proverbios 19:17

17. (Compare Pr 14:21; Psa 37:26).

hath pity--shown by acts (compare Margin).

Proverbios 19:18

18. (Compare Pr 13:24; 23:13).

let not ... spare--literally, "do not lift up thy soul" (Psa 24:4; 25:1), that is, do not desire to his death; a caution to passionate parents against angry chastisement.

Proverbios 19:19

19. Repeated efforts of kindness are lost on ill-natured persons.

Proverbios 19:20

20. (Compare Pr 13:18-20).

latter end--(Pr 5:11). In youth prepare for age.

Proverbios 19:21

21. (Compare Pr 16:1, 9; Psa 33:10, 11). The failure of man's devices is implied.

Proverbios 19:22

22. desire--that is, to do good, indicates a kind disposition (Pr 11:23); and the poor thus affected are better than liars, who say and do not.

Proverbios 19:24

24. bosom--literally, a wide dish in which the hand was plunged in eating (Mt 26:23). Compare Pr 26:15, the sentiment expressed with equal irony and less exaggeration.

Proverbios 19:25

25. Such is the benefit of reproof; even the simple profit, much more the wise.

Proverbios 19:26

26. Unfilial conduct often condemned (Pr 17:21-25; 20:20; De 21:18, 21).

Proverbios 19:27

27. Avoid whatever leads from truth.

Proverbios 19:28

28. ungodly witness--(Compare Margin), one false by bad principles (compare Pr 6:12).

scorneth judgment--sets at naught the dictates of justice.

devoureth--literally, "swalloweth," as something delightful.

Proverbios 19:29

29. Their punishment is sure, fixed, and ready (compare Pr 3:34; 10:13).
