1 DEL hombre son las disposiciones del corazón: mas de Jehová la respuesta de la lengua. 2 Todos los caminos del hombre son limpios en su opinión: mas Jehová pesa los espíritus. 3 Encomienda á Jehová tus obras, y tus pensamientos serán afirmados. 4 Todas las cosas ha hecho Jehová por sí mismo, y aun al impío para el día malo. 5 Abominación es á Jehová todo altivo de corazón: aunque esté mano sobre mano, no será reputado inocente. 6 Con misericordia y verdad se corrige el pecado: y con el temor de Jehová se apartan del mal los hombres. 7 Cuando los caminos del hombre son agradables á Jehová, aun á sus enemigos pacificará con él. 8 Mejor es lo poco con justicia, que la muchedumbre de frutos sin derecho. 9 El corazón del hombre piensa su camino: mas Jehová endereza sus pasos. 10 Adivinación está en los labios del rey: en juicio no prevaricará su boca. 11 Peso y balanzas justas son de Jehová: obra suya son todas las pesas de la bolsa. 12 Abominación es á los reyes hacer impiedad: porque con justicia será afirmado el trono. 13 Los labios justos son el contentamiento de los reyes; y aman al que habla lo recto. 14 La ira del rey es mensajero de muerte: mas el hombre sabio la evitará. 15 En la alegría del rostro del rey está la vida; y su benevolencia es como nube de lluvia tardía. 16 Mejor es adquirir sabiduría que oro preciado; y adquirir inteligencia vale más que la plata. 17 El camino de los rectos es apartarse del mal: su alma guarda el que guarda su camino. 18 Antes del quebrantamiento es la soberbia; y antes de la caída la altivez de espíritu. 19 Mejor es humillar el espíritu con los humildes, que partir despojos con los soberbios. 20 El entendido en la palabra, hallará el bien: y el que confía en Jehová, él es bienaventurado. 21 El sabio de corazón es llamado entendido: y la dulzura de labios aumentará la doctrina. 22 Manantial de vida es el entendimiento al que lo posee: mas la erudición de los necios es necedad. 23 El corazón del sabio hace prudente su boca; y con sus labios aumenta la doctrina. 24 Panal de miel son los dichos suaves: suavidad al alma y medicina á los huesos. 25 Hay camino que parece derecho al hombre, mas su salida son caminos de muerte. 26 El alma del que trabaja, trabaja para sí; porque su boca le constriñe. 27 El hombre perverso cava el mal; y en sus labios hay como llama de fuego. 28 El hombre perverso levanta contienda; y el chismoso aparta los mejores amigos. 29 El hombre malo lisonjea á su prójimo, y le hace andar por el camino no bueno: 30 Cierra sus ojos para pensar perversidades; mueve sus labios, efectúa el mal. 31 Corona de honra es la vejez, que se hallará en el camino de justicia. 32 Mejor es el que tarde se aira que el fuerte; y el que se enseñorea de su espíritu, que el que toma una ciudad. 33 La suerte se echa en el seno: mas de Jehová es el juicio de ella.

Proverbios 16:1

Pr 16:1-33.

1. preparations--schemes.

in man--or literally, "to man," belonging, or pertaining to him.

the answer ... Lord--The efficient ordering is from God: "Man proposes; God disposes."

Proverbios 16:2

2. clean--or, "faultless."

weigheth--or, "tries," "judges," implying that they are faulty (Pr 21:2; 24:12).

Proverbios 16:3

3. (Compare Margin). Rely on God for success to your lawful purposes.

Proverbios 16:4

4. for himself--"for its answer," or "purpose," that is, according to God's plan; the wicked are for the day of evil (Psa 49:5; Jr 17:18); sinning and suffering answer to each other, are indissolubly united.

Proverbios 16:5

5. (Compare Pr 3:32).

Proverbios 16:6

6. By mercy and truth--that is, God's (Psa 85:10); He effects the atonement, or covering of sin; and the principles of true piety incline men to depart from evil; or, "mercy" and "truth" may be man's, indicative of the gracious tempers which work instrumentally in procuring pardon.

purged--expiated (as in Le 16:33; Is 27:9, Hebrew).

7. Persecutions, of course, excepted.

9. (Compare Pr 16:3).

directeth--establisheth.

Proverbios 16:10

10. The last clause depends on the first, expressing the importance of equity in decisions, so authoritative.

Proverbios 16:11

11. are the Lord's ... his work--that is, what He has ordered, and hence should be observed by men.

Proverbios 16:12

12. Rulers are rightly expected, by their position, to hate evil; for their power is sustained by righteousness.

13. A specification of the general sentiment of Pr 16:12.

Proverbios 16:14

14. This wrath, so terrible and certain, like messengers of death (1Ki 2:25), can be appeased by the wise.

Proverbios 16:15

15. light of ... countenance--favor (Psa 4:6).

life--preserves it, or gives blessings which make it valuable.

the latter rain--fell just before harvest and matured the crop; hence specially valuable (De 11:14).

Proverbios 16:17

17. The highway--A common, plain road represents the habitual course of the righteous in departing from evil.

keepeth--observes.

Proverbios 16:18-19

18-19. (Compare Pr 15:33). Haughtiness and pride imply self-confidence which produces carelessness, and hence

a fall--literally, "sliding."

Proverbios 16:20

20. handleth a matter--wisely considers "the word," that is, of God (compare Pr 13:13).

trusteth--(Compare Psa 2:12; 118:8, 9).

Proverbios 16:21

21. wise in heart--who rightly consider duty.

sweetness of the lips--eloquent discourse, persuades and instructs others.

Proverbios 16:22

22. Understanding--or, "discretion," is a constant source of blessing (Pr 13:14), benefiting others; but fools' best efforts are folly.

Proverbios 16:23

23. The heart is the source of wisdom flowing from the mouth.

Proverbios 16:24

24. (Compare Pr 15:26). Gentle, kind words, by soothing the mind, give the body health.

Proverbios 16:25

25. (Compare Pr 14:2).

Proverbios 16:26

26. Diligence is a duty due to one's self, for his wants require labor.

Proverbios 16:27

27. ungodly man--(Compare Pr 6:12).

diggeth up evil--labors for it.

in his lips ... fire--His words are calumniating (Jas 3:6).

Proverbios 16:29

29. violent man--or, "man of mischief" (Pr 3:31).

enticeth--(Pr 1:10).

Proverbios 16:30

30. He shutteth his eyes--denoting deep thought (Psa 64:6).

moving his lips--or, "biting his lips"--a determined purpose (Pr 6:13).

Proverbios 16:31

31. (Compare Pr 20:29).

if--or, which may be supplied properly, or without it the sense is as in Pr 3:16; 4:10, that piety is blessed with long life.

Proverbios 16:32

32. (Compare Pr 14:29).

taketh a city--that is, by fighting.

Proverbios 16:33

33. Seemingly the most fortuitous events are ordered by God.
